在英语中，大家常常需要询问某处是不是存在某物或某人，这就要用到“is there”和“are there”这两个疑问句式。这两个句子都是英语中常见的疑问句式，意思相近，但，用起来是不同的。
1、is there和are there的不同之处?
“is there”和“are there”的主要不同在于它们所跟的名词是单数还是复数。简单来讲，“is there”用于询问是不是存在某个单数名词或不可数名词，而“are there”则用于询问是不是存在某些复数名词。
例1：当大家想了解房间里是不是有一本书时，大家会说：Is there a book in the room? 房间里有一本书吗?
这里用了“is there”，由于“book”是单数名词。
例2：当大家想了解房间里是不是有一些书时，大家则会说：Are there any books in the room? 房间里有书吗?
此时大家用了“are there”，由于“books”是复数名词。
例3：假如大家想了解冰箱里是不是有牛奶，大家会问：Is there any milk in the fridge? 冰箱里有牛奶吗?
这里虽然“milk”是不可数名词，但大家仍然用“is there”。
例4：Is there a doctor available who speaks Spanish?有会说西班牙语的大夫在吗?
例5：Is there a problem with the internet connection?网络连接有哪些问题吗?
例6：Are there any new movies playing at the cinema this weekend?这个周末电影院有上映新电影吗?

2、is there和are there的回答
对于“is there”和“are there”的疑问，大家的回答方法也略有不同。对于“is there”的提问，大家一般用“Yes, there is.”或“No, there isn’t.”来回答;而对于“are there”的提问，大家则用“Yes, there are.”或“No, there aren’t.”来回答。
例句1：
——Is there a computer on the desk? 桌子上有一台电脑吗?
——Yes, there is. 是的，有一台。 /No, there isn’t. 没。
例句2：
——Are there any flowers in the garden? 花园里有花吗?
——Yes, there are. 是的，有。 /No, there aren’t. 没。
